While October and November are colder months, bringing darker evenings and frosty mornings, there’s still time to plant bulbs in your garden.
Planting in October provides a great opportunity for gardeners to prepare their gardens for an early display of blooms for the following year.
During the month of October the main priority should be tidying up the garden and preparing for the colder weather to come. Gardeners should enhance their garden's appearance by clearing away spent annuals and trimming faded perennials, ensuring a tidy and well-maintained look. Plus getting the groundwork done to ensure beds and containers are well-prepared for flowering in early spring.
To brighten your gardening beds and to bring some colour to your garden this autumn, we suggest planting Skimmias, Cyclamen, Hellebores and Heathers.
Between August-December is a great time to plant your spring bulbs ahead of time and we suggest planting a selection to ensure a beautiful display of blooms once the winter is over.
We currently have a great selection of spring bulbs available to purchase online including:
All of the above are perfect for plating from October onwards.
November signifies the final transition between autumn and winter, bringing much colder temperatures for gardeners across the country. While it’s not a particularly enjoyable time to get out and garden, there’s a few jobs still to do. We would recommend focusing on protecting much of your plants from frost, ensuring those that are susceptible to damage in temperatures below zero have proper insulation in the form of mulch, as well as utilising your garden sheds and greenhouses for storage of bulbs over the winter.
It’s also a good idea to clean up the garden and ensure there is limited debris of old and dead plants, as well as keeping the lawn clear of items to ensure healthy growth for the new year.
While most of your gardening exploits will slow down in October and November, these months are perfect for vegetable growers. A number of vegetables can be sown in October and November, allowing the roots to develop and growth to begin before the ground freezes and becomes too hard.
Examples of vegetables to sow include:
