Some of the best spring bulbs to plant in later summer and early autumn are your trusty favourites. Including:
Most of your spring bulbs need to be planted before the first frost of the season. So be sure to get them in early enough before the weather begins to turn. Anytime between now and mid to late October should suffice, however keep an eye on soil conditions and the upcoming forecast.
Bulbs that are of a high quality will usually look firm and plump. If you have stored bulbs from previous purchases, make sure that these have not turned soft or mushy.
When planting your bulbs be sure to dig a hole big enough to cover them. It is usually recommended that the hole is 2 or 3x the depth of the bulb itself. Once planted, be sure to give them some water, just enough to support their growth and keep the ground from drying.
If you wish to use any feeds you can do once shoots begin to appear.
If you leave planting a little later than recommended, the latest you should plant your spring bulbs is November. However, this will depend on the climate and the soil conditions.
Having said that, some bulbs such as tulips and daffodils will survive being planted later into the year and even as late as after Christmas.
We would always recommend reading into each variety of bulb before planting to make sure you are doing the right thing for the most successful growth.
