Lavender

Lavender is one of the most loved garden plants, bringing soft colour, fragrance and year round appeal to borders, pathways and patio pots. Its scented flowers and silvery foliage create a calm, Mediterranean feel, while its long flowering season makes it a favourite for bees and other pollinators. Whether you want a low hedge, a feature plant for a pot or a drift of colour through the garden, lavender is always a timeless choice.

There are many beautiful varieties to enjoy. Lavandula angustifolia varieties provide classic English lavender fragrance with neat, compact growth. Lavandula Hidcote is one of the most popular, with deep violet blooms and tidy mounding foliage. Lavandula Munstead offers soft lavender blue flowers and is perfect for edging paths or planting in sunny borders. For something with a more decorative look, French Lavender (Lavandula stoechas) brings showy bracts and a long flowering period that continues well into summer.

Lavender thrives in full sun and well drained soil, and once established it is incredibly low maintenance. It is drought tolerant, loves heat and is ideal for south facing gardens, gravel borders and pots. A light trim after flowering keeps plants compact and encourages fresh growth for the following year.

Lavender pairs beautifully with other sun loving, Mediterranean style plants. Try combining it with rosemary, santolina, or thyme for a warm, coastal look, or mix it with soft, airy perennials such as gaura or nepeta to create a relaxed, summery display. Lavender also works well alongside ornamental grasses, bringing contrast and gentle movement in the breeze.
