For many homeowners, the garden is an extension of the space inside their property; somewhere that during the warmer months can become another room. If you want to get the most out of your garden this summer, then make the New Year the time to start thinking about transforming it.

Whilst it might not be possible to get out there just yet and begin making those transformations that will give you a great space in the summer, now is a good time to start planning what you can do with your garden as soon as the weather improves. In this blog post, we will take a look at trees, specifically patio trees, and how they can be used to really transform the look of your garden.

What is a patio tree?

As the name suggests, patio trees are smaller trees that can easily be grown in even the smallest of gardens. They will grow perfectly happily in a container rather than in a garden bed which makes them a great option for courtyard gardens, smaller gardens or even for growing on a patio or balcony. If you always thought that you didn’t have the space for a tree then you do - you just need to consider a patio tree!

If you have a larger garden then don’t think that patio trees are not for you, either. They are a great way to add a focal point to your patio and can look fantastic as part of a well planned out seating or al-fresco dining area.

Choosing a patio tree

The same rules apply to choosing a patio tree that you might use for other plants in your garden. You should consider whether the area where you will be placing the tree is sunny, in the shade or a mixture of both - this will help you to select a tree that is most suited to the conditions in your garden. There is less need to worry about the soil type as the patio tree will be in a container which will give you a little more control over drainage.

One of the biggest things to think about is whether you want a patio tree with flowers, or one that will give you some stunning foliage. A  dwarf cherry blossom, for example, will provide you with a stunning pop of pale pink whilst a bay tree is all about the bright green foliage and the vibrant aroma.
