Geum

Geum is a cheerful, long flowering perennial that brings bright, uplifting colour to the garden from late spring into summer. Its open, dancing blooms and tidy clumps of fresh green foliage make it ideal for borders, cottage garden planting and mixed containers. Geums are reliable, easy to grow and perfect for adding warm tones that sit beautifully among other early summer plants.

There are many popular varieties to choose from. Geum Totally Tangerine is a firm favourite, known for its endless apricot orange flowers that appear for months. Geum Mrs Bradshaw offers rich, fiery red blooms that brighten any border, while Geum Lady Stratheden produces clear yellow flowers on tall, elegant stems. Compact forms such as Geum Koi give vibrant colour in a smaller footprint, perfect for pots or the front of the border.

Geums thrive in full sun or light shade and prefer well drained soil. They’re hardy, dependable and low maintenance, making them ideal for both beginners and experienced gardeners. Removing faded flowers encourages more blooms, and dividing clumps every few years helps keep plants vigorous.

These colourful perennials pair beautifully with soft, summery planting. Try mixing Geum with hardy geraniums, salvia, nepeta or gaura for a relaxed, meadow inspired look. They also work well alongside ornamental grasses and lightly structured shrubs that allow their vibrant flowers to shine.
