Callistemon trees, often known as bottlebrush trees, bring vibrant colour and an exotic feel to UK gardens. Their bright, brush like flowers appear from late spring into summer, attracting bees and adding a lively splash of red, pink or lemon depending on the variety. With their evergreen foliage and tidy growth habit, these trees offer year round interest as well as a dramatic burst of seasonal colour.
Popular varieties include Callistemon Red Cluster, valued for its bold red flowers, and Callistemon Citrinus, which produces vibrant blooms set against fresh green leaves. For something softer, Callistemon Pink brings a gentle blush of colour that suits both modern and cottage garden styles. Standard and patio forms are perfect for smaller gardens or pots, where they offer height and a reliable display without taking up much space.
Callistemon trees are sun loving and thrive in well drained soil, making them an excellent choice for warm, sheltered spots. Once established, they are surprisingly low maintenance and cope well with light pruning after flowering to keep their shape neat.
These trees pair beautifully with Mediterranean style planting. Try combining them with rosemary or santolina for a coastal feel, or mix them with ornamental grasses or nepeta for a softer, more relaxed look. They also sit well with drought tolerant shrubs such as cistus or phlomis, creating a warm and colourful display through the summer months.
