A garden hedge is a vital factor in garden displays, not only do they clearly define borders and provide privacy, but they also provide a brilliant backdrop to flower beds.
Some gardeners chose to plant a fast growing hedge such as Cherry Laurel whilst other gardeners opt for Buxus Hedging which is slow growing and ideal for creating low formal hedges.
When is best to plant your garden hedge?
Bare Root Hedges - If you are buying Bare Root then these need to be planted between November and January
Pot Grown Hedges - You can plant these hedges all year round providing that the ground isn’t waterlogged or frozen at time of planting
Planting a hedge
Ensure that you are not planting too close to a building as the roots could interfere with structures
Check the ground - you do not want the soil to be waterlogged or too dry
Ensure that you add some compost or manure to get your plants off to the best possible start
Examples of Popular Garden Hedges
Photinia Red Robin - A fast growing hedge which grows approximately 30cm per year! This evergreen hedge produces new growth in the spring which emerges a vibrant red colour before maturing to dark green. This wonderful shrub also produces dainty white flowers against its glossy foliage in the summertime.
Cherry Laurel - Easily the most popular hedge in the United Kingdom. This fast growing hedge has evergreen, glossy leaves and is very low maintenance. Growing at approximately 40 - 50cm per year.
Buxus Hedging - Ideal for creating low growing, formal hedges. A slow growing shrub which will take approximately 10 years to reach 1m tall. Very low maintenance.
