What is a grower pot?

Growers pots are the first pots you will find your plants or shrubs in when they leave our Lancashire-based nursery. We select these pots to give them the best start in life. From choosing the right size to ensuring they have adequate drainage. When you receive your plant in its grower pot, you can choose to continue growing your plant in a pot, both for safe growing and to avoid the use of a bed or larger space in your garden. However, as your plant grows different sizes of pots are required. Reducing stress placed on the plant as it grows in size.

In this guide we will explain the different sizes and types of grower pots to help you make the rest decision for your plants.

Different sizes of grower pots

Whether you are growing houseplants and indoor plants or plants for your garden, there’s a wide range of different grower pot sizes available.

The appropriate size of a grower pot is determined by a plant’s height and diameter. If a plant is expected to hang, it can be planted in a hanging basket or hanging grower pot.

The smallest sizes of grower pots typically start from as small as 4-8 cm in diameter, while larger pots can reach sizes of 10L, which is 28cm in diameter up to 15L or 20L in diameter. Our nursery offers a diverse range of pot sizes to cater to various plant needs, ensuring optimal growth and development.

  • 9cm Pots (P9) - Perfect for growing stock along with various herbs and herbaceous plants. These square pots are a staple for our nursery stock, providing an excellent starting point for our young plants.Perennials such as ourEchinacea purpurea will arrive in your garden in their 9cm grower pots, ready to be planted in your borders and plant beds

  • 2L Pots - A 2L grower pot is another standard size that is recommended for the growth of shrubs and herbaceous species. A good example of this would be a youngHydrangea, which we can supply in a variety of sized grower pots from 1.5L - 5L

  • 3L Pots - A step up from the 2L, these pots are typically used for a wide range of  garden centre plants and allow for greater room for growth. Perfect for shrubs that will grow rapidly from young

Larger sized pots (5L, 7.5L, 10L, 20L) are used for various plants, with larger pots supporting bigger, more robust growth for mature plants. This can include the likes of youngolive trees, bay trees and other largershrubs. It is possible to find grower pots much larger than the standard sizes.

Our table below shows how big the standard growers pots are in cm when the diameter is measured from the top of the pot.

Important factors to consider when choosing gower pot sizes

If you’re choosing grower pots for perennials and shrubs you already have in your garden or for when your plants outgrow their nursery pots, it’s important to consider the following factors:

  • The estimated height and width of your plant at its most mature growth stage

  • How much soil and water the plant needs to grow and how much the pot can hold

  • The shape of the grower pot, whether round, square or oval is more appropriate for the comfort and growth of the plant

  • If you need to control the moisture of the soil in your pot and airflow, you should ensure that the grower pot has a hole or small holes at the bottom

  • Plant type: Some plants have specific pot preferences. For example, azaleas and blueberries prefer acidic soil, so consider using plastic pots to prevent leaching

  • Repotting frequency: More frequent repotting might justify smaller pots initially.
