Plant in full sun in well drained soil, ideally with some shelter.
You can plant at any time of year provided the ground is not frozen or waterlogged. If planting during warmer weather, water regularly until established.
Hollyhocks are prone to rust, particularly later in the season. Good airflow and removing affected leaves helps manage this.
