Cynara scolymus, commonly known as the Globe Artichoke, is a striking architectural perennial grown for its bold, silvery-green foliage and tall flower stems topped with large, thistle-like purple blooms in summer. It brings strong structure and texture to the garden, whether used as an ornamental feature or grown for its edible flower buds.
It thrives in full sun and well-drained, fertile soil, preferring a sheltered position to protect its tall stems from wind. For a bold, textured border, combine it with Stipa tenuissima ‘Pony Tails’ for movement and Achillea ‘Summer Pastels’ for soft, complementary colour.
