Mahonia

Mahonia are bold, architectural evergreen shrubs that bring colour, fragrance, and structure to the garden during the coldest months. Flowering from November to March, they produce striking clusters of golden-yellow, sweetly scented blooms that brighten the winter landscape and attract early pollinators. Their dramatic, holly-like foliage adds texture and interest all year round, followed by rich purple-blue berries in spring.

These hardy, low-maintenance shrubs thrive in partial shade or full shade, making them ideal for brightening darker corners, woodland gardens, or north-facing borders. Once established, they’re drought-tolerant and require very little care, rewarding you with year-round beauty and seasonal scent.

Popular varieties include Mahonia x media ‘Charity, ‘Winter Sun’, and ‘Soft Caress’ — all valued for their winter blooms and elegant, spiky foliage. Whether planted alone or as part of a mixed border, Mahonia adds structure, colour, and a touch of warmth to the winter garden.
