Magnolias are one of the most versatile species of shrubs on the planet, showcasing a wide range of flowers and bloomsacross their varieties. There are many deciduous options available on the market, each with its own charms and characteristics. However, those who can’t be bothered with lots of maintenance could benefit from choosing an evergreen magnolia variety.
Evergreen garden plants offer gardeners a bit of respite from having to provide as much care, while also providing visual interest all year round. This blog should help you find your favourite evergreen magnolia tree, highlighting some of the prettiest, most garden-friendly options on the market.
When you think of the Magnolia evergreen varieties, the grandiflora is likely the plant that appears in your head. They hail from the Southeastern United States and are known for growing to fairly sturdy sizes, even when they start in smaller pots. The ‘Little Gem’ is one of the most popular species within the grandiflora family, having many of the variety’s trademark characteristics, including:
Large glossy green leaves
Long flowering periods
Large white flowers with distinct petals
Hardiness down to -20 degrees Celsius
Make sure to plant this magnolia in full sun/partial shade, offer protection from stronger winds and plant in well-drained soil of aslightly acidic pH.
This evergreen magnolia is bred in New Zealand, coming from the mind of renowned breederMark Jury. ‘Vanilla Pearls’ is one of the most popular evergreen hedging plants or shrubs on the market, complete with simple yet glossy green leaves. It’s also a favourite among gardeners for its wide cream petals and yellow centres, which grow all the way up and down the stems, rather than at the tips alone.
The growing requirements are much the same of grandiflora varieties. It’s worth noting there are also some other great varieties underneath the Fairy Magnolia umbrella.
The original breed of theFairy Magnolia family is known for having many of the same characteristics as the ‘Vanilla Pearls’ variety, albeit with thinner petals on more pink, fragrant flowerheads.
This variety of Fairy Magnolia covers similar ground to the other varieties from Mark Jury. ‘Honey Velvet’ comes with yellowish cream flowers, with slightly tighter heads and leaves with a bit more of a wavy visual profile.
