The start of the process is getting the lay of the land for your specific garden. This means:

  • Checking how much soil you have, getting a feel for its pH balance and what already grows there

  • Figuring out how the sun hits your garden to figure out where certain plants will thrive

  • Checking for flatter spots with consistent access to water

  • Determining how much space you have to plant things – also keeping an eye out for opportunities to incorporateclimbers, hedges, etc.

When you have a better understanding of your garden space, the next steps will be easier to take. If you’renot lucky enough to have a garden, consider how you could incorporate plants into your indoor space.

Setting goals

Don’t worry if you kill a couple of plants – it’s a learning curve for all of us to develop sufficiently green thumbs! Once you get the hang of your smaller patch, bigger projects will become more of an option.
