As an avid gardener, you’ll know that gardening in October is all about protection and preparation for the colder months ahead. The change in weather and temperature requires adjusting how you take care of your flowers and houseplants, ensuring they are kept healthy and thriving throughout the chilly UK winter.

In this blog post, we will be going through a comprehensive October checklist, to help you keep on top of your garden and plant maintenance. Whether you’re new to gardening or simply need a refresher on what to do for your garden in October , we’ve got you covered.

Flowers & bulbs

When it comes to flowers, there are a couple of things you should do in October to help your garden bloom the best it can.

When preparing your garden for a new season, you should check to see if any flowers have wilted and died, and remove them from the garden bed. This keeps your garden looking neat and tidy for the season ahead!

Once your garden is cleared and prepped for winter, planting spring-blooming bulbs takes precedence in October. Bulbs such as tulips, daffodils, and crocuses bloom in the spring, so planting them in the month of October is the ideal time, before the ground freezes up in the coming months.

Protecting your perennials is also another important thing to prepare for in October. You should use mulch across the base of your perennials, in order to best protect them from winter frost.

House plants

During the summer months, you may have placed some of your house plants outside to bask in the sun. October is the right time to bring them back indoors before the chilly winter weather sets in.

Another thing to remember to do this time of year is to move your house plants closer to the windows in your home. With sunlight scarce this time of year, plants will need all the sunlight they can get. Moving your house plants closer to the natural light can help them stay healthy and thrive.

Another thing to remember is to dust your house plants. If you have plants with large leaves, it’s vital you give them a good dusting here and there, to ensure they can absorb as much light as possible.

Greenhouse plants

If you own a greenhouse then October is the perfect time to prep your space for winter. You should ensure that the temperature stays optimal by installing a thermometer. This helps you keep track of any fluctuations in temperature during the change of seasons.
