Christmas is the perfect time to brighten both your garden and your home with vibrant winter plants and flowers. There are many different types of plants you can choose from that thrive during this time of year and make for a brilliantly festive addition to your home and garden both at Christmas time and into the New Year.
The star of the show, poinsettias flaunt vibrant red bracts (modified leaves) that mimic flowers. They are the most well-known Christmas plant that you will see crop up everywhere as your shop for your Christmas goods. Choose fiery red, creamy pink, or marbled varieties for a vibrant pop of colour.
Looking after me:
Remember, a poinsettia prefers bright, indirect light and slightly moist soil. You can keep indoors during the holiday season, but these plants will also grow outdoors during the summer and warmer months as an evergreen plant.
Never allow your poinsettia to sit in pots that do not allow for sufficient drainage. Excess water to their roots can cause rot.
This traditional symbol of Christmas features glossy green leaves with spiky edges and bright red berries. Opt for dwarf varieties for indoor decorating. Keep them in cool, brightly lit spaces and water regularly. At One Click Plants we stock an excellent selection of Holly to choose from. Including standard Holly Trees, Dwarf Holly Bushes, and variations of Holly Plants.
Looking after me:
Holly plants in their many varieties are incredibly low maintenance, once established. Just ensure to water them regularly in the first two years of their growth, particularly during dry summer seasons.
Also known as the Christmas Rose, this is an early flowering Hellebore, that provides white flowers perfectly in time for Christmas day. With a long winter flowering period, this plant makes for a beautiful addition to your garden, bringing some life and colour to your autumn and winter flower beds.
Looking after me:
In order to get the most out of this Hellebore’s long flowering season, we suggest you position it in a space that is either partially shaded or fully shaded. This plant prefers to be away from the light in rich, well-drained soil.
The Christmas Cactus, or Schlumbergera Bridgesii, is a very popular flowering houseplant that makes for an ideal gift this festive season. With beautiful dainty flowers and succulent green foliage, this plant helps to brighten a space in your home, during these dark winter months.
Looking after me:
Supplied by our teams in a growers pot, we suggest positioning your Christmas Cactus in a light and bright position where it will receive direct sunlight in your home. Incredibly low-maintenance, you won’t have to do much to ensure this popular house plant thrives in your home this winter.
This fragrant herb isn't just for cooking! Rosemary plants have beautiful green needle-like leaves and a delightful festive aroma. They prefer well-draining soil and plenty of sunlight, making them a cheerful addition to sunny windowsills. Plus, you can clip some sprigs when rustling up winter dishes. Perfect for seasoning joints of beef and game dishes.
Looking after me
In order to keep this plant thriving they are best grown at the front of a border or planted in a container. As long as they are planted in well drained soil and in a sunny position, you will enjoy the brilliant strong fragrance as this plant thrives both indoors and outdoors.
