There over 700 types of Eucalyptus trees out there, with all of them sharing characteristics and having distinct traits. If you’re looking to incorporate some evergreen eucalyptus into your home’s interior or garden, it’s good to get a base knowledge of the different species available for purchase, along with how to grow and care for them.
This blog explores some of the most popular types of eucalyptus, highlighting how they look, how to care for them properly and what you can expect from them in your garden.
Arguably the most popular of the eucalyptus tree types, gunnii (aka Cider Gum Eucalyptus) is a compact tree, perfect for planting in larger pots. It’s known for being hardy and low-maintenance when planted with access to sunlight in moist, well-drained soil.
How it looks:Rounded, silvery-blue leaves with smooth, reddish-brown bark.
Care tips:It’s one of the hardier eucalyptus plant types, able to withstand colder winters (protection might be needed should temperatures go below -5°C).
This is the shrub edition of classic eucalyptus gunnii, a more compact, rounded version perfect for patios and indoor displays.
How it looks:It has beautifully round silver-blue leaves with shorter branches/trunks.
Care tips:Similar care to typical gunnii but needs regular pruning to thrive.
This type of eucalyptus, known for its popular ‘Baby Blue’ variety, is a popular bushy variety that can be grown in poorly drained, very moist soil. It’s also known for being insect-repellant, so perfect for patios and balconies.
How it looks:Greener foliage and bushier than some other eucalyptus varieties.
Care tips:Never let soil dry out, pruning in early spring to three buds above the base.
It’s important to note that there are some similarities between the different types of eucalyptus when it comes to caring for them. Some general across the board rules include:
Eucalyptus can thrive in full sun or partial shade
They need regular watering for the first few years
Fertiliser isn’t necessary for growing eucalyptus
They’re all susceptible to pests and diseases
Planting in proper beds can be invasive and damaging to other plants
With these tips, you should feel comfortable growing most varieties of eucalyptus, but it’s always worth looking at the specific tips associated with each that you purchase.
