Magnolias are a gorgeous addition to any garden flower display, whether planted in pots or as a part of a flower bed. However, various magnolia species can be chosen to best suit your sense of aesthetic taste and overarching garden ambitions.

We’ve put together this blog to highlight some of our favourite species of magnolia flowers, so you can feel confident picking the right flowers for your outdoor space.

Magnolia Susan

Magnolia Susan is a popular variety, known for large pink/purple petals that show up with a pleasant fragrance in mid-late spring. These are deciduous shrubs that require minimal pruning and lose their leaves in autumn.

Magnolia liliflora

Magnolia liliflora, especially the‘Nigra’ variety are known for being slow-growing and producing stunning tulip-shaped flowers. The petals are deeply red and purple, opening to reveal a light pink interior. Again, it’s deciduous, however, flowering later in May and July.

Magnolia Betty

TheMagnolia ‘Betty’ is a stunning deciduous shrub, working great as an ornamental plant. It’s known for having large, cup-shaped and pleasant-smelling pink petals, with a compact, upright profile.

Saucer Magnolia (Magnolia × Soulangeana)

ThisMagnolia Soulangeana hybrid is known for white/purple/pink, goblet-shaped flowers with massive petals, along with glossy green foliage. This magnolia species is also known for being full hardy, surviving plenty ofBritish winters with the right shelter. There are also ‘Black Tulip’ varieties available – one of the rarest, darkest magnolias that strongly resemble tulips.

Star Magnolia (Magnolia stellata)

This is a smaller, shrub magnolia variety that blooms in the earlier parts of spring. It boasts simple but pretty, star-shaped flower with white petals, almost reminiscent of daisies. It’s worth noting that its flowers can be susceptible to serious frost damage.

Magnolia denudata

These magnolias are known for lighter, goblet-shaped flowers, with the ‘Yellow River’ variety renowned for their stunningly fragrant yellow flowers. They closely resemble lilies when they’re open, with the petals fading over time into creamier white.

Magnolia ‘Genie’

This is another striking variety, with dark purple-red blossoms that look almost like chalices. They need to be protected from cold winds but can be slow growing, so are great for patient gardeners.

Evergreen Magnolia varieties

Along with the deciduous varieties described above, there are also a range of different evergreen magnolias. Note, their leaves will remain all year around but the flowers might still show themselves from spring and sometimes through autumn.

Evergreen varieties include:

  • Magnolia grandiflora ‘Little Gem’

  • Fairy Magnolia (White, Blush, ‘Honey Velvet’)

These are especially suitable for gardeners with less time for maintenance, etc.
